Taiwan slaps ban on poultry imports from Thailand
TAIPEI, Taiwan (AP) - Taiwan on Saturday banned poultry imports from Thailand, where a bird flu outbreak is suspected to have killed one person and sickened as many as four others, authorities said.
Imports of live and frozen fowl products will be suspended immediately, the Council of Agriculture said in a statement. It also urged Taiwanese farmers to suspend visits to poultry farms in Thailand. Officials said Taiwan does not import any fowl products from Thailand, but imposed the ban as a precaution. Last week, Taiwan slaughtered more than 50,000 chickens after a milder flu strain, known as the H5N2 virus, was detected. Officials have said it's less dangerous than the H5N1 strain that has infected poultry farms in Japan, Vietnam, South Korea and Thailand, but wanted to wipe it out to prevent the virus from potentially mutating. - APFor the latest news from The AP Wire click here
