Bangladesh offers help to quake-hit South Asian nations
DHAKA, Bangladesh: Bangladesh has offered help to India, Sri Lanka and the Maldives after massive tidal waves devastated the three South Asian nations, the government said Wednesday.
The offer came when Prime Minister Khaleda Zia spoke by phone Tuesday with Sri Lankan President Chandrika Kumaratunga, Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and the Maldives President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom.
Zia told the leaders that Bangladesh will send "all possible assistance'' to their disaster-struck nations, a statement from her office said.
The statement did not specify the kinds of assistance Bangladesh has offered.
The giant Asian quake and tsunami killed at least 21,000 people in Sri Lanka, 4,500 in India and 55 in the Maldives. Thousands were still missing.
Bangladesh escaped the worst of the disaster, reporting that only two children drowned after their boat sank in high waves off the coast.--AP
