Coalition base comes under mortar fire in Iraq

WARSAW, Poland: A coalition base in the Iraqi city of Karbala came under mortar fire overnight, while sappers defused three roadside bombs in the region, a spokesman for the Polish-led multinational force said Wednesday.

A few mortar rounds were fired late Tuesday night at Camp Kilo, where chiefly Bulgarian troops are based, Maj. Slawomir Walenczykowski said by phone from the stabilization force's Camp Babylon headquarters. The attack resulted in no injuries or damage.

Also Tuesday night, coalition sappers and Iraqi police found and defused three improvised roadside bombs in the Karbala and Kut areas, Walenczykowski said.

Poland commands a multinational force of 6,200 troops in south-central Iraq, including some 2,400 of its own soldiers. - AP
