Fisheries department to create more artificial reefs
KUALA PERLIS: The Fisheries Development Authority plans to increase the number of artificial reefs throughout the country to help inshore fishermen boost their catches.
Its deputy director-general (development) Mohd Nor Hassan said artificial reefs had proven to be rapid breeding grounds for marine life for the past two decades.
He said the authority had put such reefs in 300 coastal areas since 1982.
“We also want inshore fishermen to operate in these areas instead of going to the open sea which is dangerous and where the catches are unpredictable,” he said after attending the inaugural Perlis Fishing Challenge programme here.
Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim launched the programme which was part of the “Visit Perlis Years 2003 to 2005” campaign.
On another matter, Mohd Nor said the price of fresh fish in the country was determined by market forces and the authority was working with the Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry to ensure that there was no profiteering due to the two sen increase in diesel prices.
Responding to the two sen rise in petrol and diesel prices announced by the Government recently, Mohd Nor said the increase should not have a significant impact on the price of fish.
“We will ensure that the additional cost is not passed to the consumers,” he said.
