Truck flips, train derails in western Japan; at least 13 injured
TOKYO (AP): A truck flipped onto its side on a highway and spilled lumber onto nearby train tracks, derailing a rush-hour commuter train and injuring at least a dozen passengers early Wednesday. The truck driver also was injured in the accident.
The driver's injuries were serious while injuries to the train passengers were not considered life-threatening, though details were not immediately available, police said. The accident took place near Wakayama, about 450 kilometers (280 miles) southwest of Tokyo, Wakayama Prefectural police spokesman Shiro Ogahara said. The four-car express train was carrying about 500 commuters at the time. The truck lost control in a bend in the highway and flipped sideways, sending lumber rolling into the tracks just as the train approached. The train driver hit the emergency brake but it was too late, Ogahara said.
