Abdullah tops Penang awards

PENANG: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi heads the list of 1,243 recipients of state awards to mark the 66th birthday of Yang di-Pertua Negri Tun Abdul Rahman Abbas today.

Abdullah will be conferred the state’s highest award, the Darjah Utama Pangkuan Negeri (DUPN), which carries the title Datuk Seri Utama.

Seven people will receive awards that carry the title 'Datuk Seri' and 69 will be conferred with the title 'Datuk'.

Among those made 'Datuk Seri' in the state's honours list are Chief Judge of Malaya Tan Sri Haidar Mohamed Noor, Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Samsudin Osman and Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Syed Hamid Albar Syed Jaafar Albar.

The others are Finance Ministry parliamentary secretary Datuk Dr Hilmi Yahaya, Director-General of Implementation Co-ordination Unit in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Khalid Ramli, former state executive councillor Tan Sri Khoo Kay Por and Lingkaran Luar Butterworth (Penang) Sdn Bhd chairman Datuk Mohd Hussaini Abdul Jamil.

Among those conferred the title 'Datuk', seven will receive the Darjah Mulia Pangkuan Negri (DMPN). They included Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Abdul Rashid Abdullah, Deputy Culture, Arts and Heritage Minister and state MCA chairman Wong Kam Hoong and state executive councillor Datuk Azhar Ibrahim.

The others are Prai assemblyman Datuk Dr K. Rajapathy, Segambut MP Dr Tan Kee Kwong, Penang Chinese Town Hall Library Committee chairman Lim Theng Yit and Penang Water Supply Department director Lee Loke @ Lee Yow Ching.

The Darjah Setia Pangkuan Negri (DSPN) award, which also carries the title 'Datuk', will be conferred on 62 recipients.

Datin Seri Su Haji Akil: Awarded the DSPN
Among them are Malaysian Administrative Modernisation and Management Planning Unit e-Government Development division director Mahadi Mohd Ibrahim, national Treasury budget division director Abdul Hanan Alang Endut, Kuala Lumpur chief police officer DCP Datuk Mustafa Abdullah, Institute of Medical Research director Dr Lye Munn Sann and state Environment Committee member Dr Ong Hean Tee.

Shoe designer Datuk Jimmy Choo Yeang Keat are among the DSPN recipients from the corporate sector. The others include UMW Holdings Bhd chief executive Dr Abdul Halim Harun, Iretex Group managing director Dr Yap Tatt Keat, A. Dennys & Co Sdn Bhd chief executive officer Haji Zainuddin Mohd Hashim, Northport Distripark Sdn Bhd chief executive officer Basheer Hassan Abdul Kader and Cartrade Sdn Bhd chief executive officer Mohamed Ilyas Pakeer Mohamed.

Other recipients are Asean Furniture Industries Council (AFIC) chairman Tan Geok Swee @ Tan Chin Huat and Malaysian Institute of Training and Development (MITD) president Dr Thomas Chee Khay Huat.

DSPN recipients from among non-governmental organisations (NGOs) include Penang Girl Guides Association chairman Datin Seri Su Haji Akil, Bayan Baru Residents Association chairman Syed Jaafar Syed Ali and Malaysian Ceylonese Congress chairman Dr Krishnar Ragupathy.

The two honorary DSPN recipients are Penang Medical College Foundation dean and Professor of Surgery Thomas Patrick J. Hennessy and former French consul-general Datin Lubna Nazer Mooraj.

The Darjah Johan Negri (DJN) will be conferred on 54 recipients while the Bintang Cemerlang Negri (BCN) will be awarded to 16 recipients.

A total 172 people will receive the Pingat Kelakuan Terpuji (PKT), 450 the Pingat Jasa Kebaktian (PJK), 454 the Pingat Jasa Masyarakat (PJM) and 20 will receive the Pingat Bakti Setia (PBS).

The Star Regional IT manager Khoo Boo Taik and photographer Wan Mohizan Wan Hussein will receive the PJM.

Other recipients from the media are Kwong Wah Yit Poh deputy general manager Chew Hock Pheng (DJN), NST reporter Lee Keng Fatt (PKT), Kwong Wah reporters Ong Boo Aun (PJK) and Tan Ean Lee @ Tan Ean Nee (PJM), Berita Harian Penang bureau chief Mutazar Abd Ghani (PJK) and Bernama photographer K. Ganeson (PJM).
