Flu reports prompt tighter border checks
PADANG BESAR: The Perlis Veterinary Services Department has doubled its personnel at the border checkpoints following reports that the bird flu virus might have hit southern Thailand.
“If the avian influenza of the deadly H5N1 strain reaches southern Thailand, this means that we have to be extra vigilant,” said department deputy director Dr Tariq Nordin.
Since the re-emergence of the virus in Thailand earlier this month, the department had stepped up checks at the border checkpoints, including at the KTMB station and road checkpoints.
Dr Tariq said none of the chicken or duck farms in Perlis recorded symptoms of bird flu, “but there must be greater safeguard to prevent the disease from crossing the border”.
He said the ban on all Thai poultry and meat items including canned or processed items made of chicken or of meat origin would continue to be enforced.
Dr Tariq also urged locals not to buy any chicken or meat items in Thailand until the “all-clear” sign had been issued.
