Taiwan says travelers catching bacterial dysentery after visiting Thailand
TAIPEI, Taiwan: Taiwan is warning travelers in Southeast Asia -- especially those visiting Thailand -- to avoid eating raw, cold food that could cause bacterial dysentery.
During the past month, Taiwan has reported a total of 14 cases of bacterial dysentery -- a severe form of diarrhea -- in tourists returning from Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia and Vietnam, the island's Center for Disease Control said in a statement. About 64 percent -- or nine -- of the cases were reported by travelers who had just returned from Thailand, the CDC said. Three cases were reported by people who visited Indonesia, one from Malaysia and one from Vietnam, the CDC said. "People who travel to these countries should pay special attention to what they eat,'' according to the statement, issued Tuesday. "They shouldn't eat raw, cold things. It's best to completely boil food and water.'' The CDC also urged travelers to frequently and thoroughly wash their hands.-AP
