News Update by The Star Newsdesk
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia will send a 60-member monitoring team to Southern Philippines to assist in peacekeeping, said Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.
Najib, who is Defence Minister, said the members were mainly officers in the army and police force and the Government, particularly Wisma Putra.
"This team is our contribution to the peace process in Southern Philippines.
"Both parties, namely the Philippines government and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front, have agreed in principle (to the team)," he said after opening the Aman Peace celebrations at Dataran Merdeka.
Najib said the team was now making the final preparations and would be in the region next month.
