15,000 Sikhs mark 400th anniversary of holy scriptures
KUALA LUMPUR: More than 15,000 Sikhs celebrated the 400th anniversary of the Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji, the Sikhs' book of scriptures, at Dataran Merdeka.
The largest gathering of the community yesterday was also held to coincide with the Merdeka celebrations.
The scriptures arrived in a helicopter from the nearby Gurudwara Sahib in Padang Merbok at 7pm and were placed on specially decorated float.
After a brief fireworks display, the float was led through a procession, accompanied by the chanting of hymns.
The procession – which included Sikhs in full warrior outfits displaying their sword-fighting skills while others were beating the Dhol (large drums) – made a 2km trek to the Gurudwara Sahib Tatt Khalsa Diwan along Jalan Haji Alang in Chow Kit here.
