Abdullah: Respect other people’s religion

KUALA LUMPUR: Every Malaysian should respect and tolerate other people’s religion for the good of all, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi.

“Just as we (Muslims) respect them when they beat their drums, when they ring their bells and so forth, they should also respect us when they hear the azan (the muezzin's call to prayer),” he said when asked to comment on the latest issue of the Bar Council’s May/June 2004 publication of Infoline in which a writer expressed unhappiness over the use of a loudspeaker for the azan.

Abdullah said Malaysians were able to enjoy progress due to prevailing peace as a result of mutual respect and tolerance among the people of various races and religions.

“We are a successful people today because we have managed to avoid racial or religious clashes,” he said.

Selangor Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Mohamad Khir Toyo urged Malaysians not to hurt the feelings of others by touching on issues relating to religion as this would lead to conflict and tension in society.

He said Malaysians should be more tolerant as they were living in a multi-religious society with people of various religions.

“We hope these people realise that we have been living in peace and goodwill over a long period because of our tolerant attitude. We hope this type of activities which do not benefit anyone will not be repeated,” he said after chairing the weekly state exco meeting here yesterday.
