‘Perks may motivate more to recycle’

BANGI: Offering incentives might motivate more people to help the country manage the mounting problem of rubbish disposal, according to Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia’s Prof Dr Jamaluddin Md Jahi.

He said Malaysians still lacked the right attitude on waste disposal and environmental management but if they were motivated, they might be more willing to “reduce, reuse and recycle.”

“It’s not so much the money, but the attitude,” said Dr Jamaluddin, who had in the past few years been the co-ordinator for environmental management graduate studies at UKM and is now the deputy dean for the graduate studies centre.

“Most people will get motivated if they are rewarded,” he said, adding that this could be in the form of a cut in the water or electricity bill.

Dr Jamaluddin, the organising committee chairman for the Second Bangi World Conference on Environmental Management, said this yesterday after delivering a keynote address.

He said the Environmental Quality Council should also advise the Housing and Local Government on environmental issues.

Malaysians could follow the example of people in some countries who bring along their own shopping bags to help reduce the use of plastic bags, he added.

Earlier, in her opening speech, Deputy Housing and Local Government Minister Datuk Azizah Mohd Dun said municipalities spent an average of 40% to 70% of taxes collected on waste collection and disposal.

She said there were inadequate dumpsites for waste disposal.
