Speakers to talk about prospects in biotechnology
|
Prof Dr Mohamed of Monash University Malaysia |
Mabic information officer Wong Yar Li, who will be speaking at the Star Education Fair 2005 on Saturday, said that biotechnology could be applied to almost every aspect of industries from chemical, pharmaceutical, food, environment, and textile to livestock and agriculture.
Mabic is a biotechnology resource centre aimed at supporting the Government’s efforts to develop biotechnology as a tool for national development.
There is currently a shortage of trained biotechnologists in Malaysia, particularly for the demands of the BioValley project, which is expected to create about 17,000 jobs related to the biotechnology industry by 2010.
Monash University Malaysia is another institution that is actively developing research and identifying new sources of growth to spur the biotech industry in the country.
The university’s senior lecturer, Prof Dr Mohamed Omar, said that the university was looking at future research that combines biotechnology, knowledge management and ICT that could be implemented in core sectors of the economy like agriculture.
Another speaker for the panel is Prof Dr Mohd Yazid Abdul Manaf from Universiti Putra Malaysia, who specialises in food technology.
Students are encouraged to attend the talks as they will not only get to know about the career opportunities and prospects in biotechnology but also about other opportunities that require training in biotechnology such as marketing, business and information technology. The Star Education Fair Career Talks will feature other career possibilities from engineering and advertising to medical sciences.
In addition to the academic path towards specific careers, parents and students can attain information on the current trends in the working world and the opportunities available. They can also visit the 260 booths in the fair to find out more about institutions of higher learning of their choice.
The Star Education Fair 2005 will be held on Jan 8 and 9 at the Putra World Trade Centre (PWTC) in Kuala Lumpur. It will be open to the public from 11am to 7pm and admission is free.
The fair will then travel to Penang for another exposition on Feb 26 and 27 at the Penang International Sports Arena. To enquire about the booking for the Penang fair, call 04-647 3838 ext 3373/3418.
