Enough mandarin oranges for CNY
PETALING JAYA: The supply of mandarin oranges is sufficient for the upcoming Chinese New Year as more than 80% of the required supply has been brought in.
Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Minister Datuk Mohd Shafie Apdal said that to date, 1.46 million boxes of mandarin oranges had been brought in about 88% of the 1.65 million boxes required for the festive season.
Shafie, who said this in a press statement after visiting a market in Seri Kembangan yesterday, said traders were urged to provide additional supplies of essential goods if there were indications of shortage.
These goods include mandarin oranges and groundnuts as these are in demand during the festivities, he said.
For other traders, the ministry encourages them to offer attractive prices to consumers.
On the price control scheme, Shafie said it was effective as it acted as a dampener to prevent prices from fluctuating or rising haphazardly.
Since the schemes implementation from 2000 until last years Hari Raya and Deepavali celebrations, we estimate that consumers have saved some RM237mil compared with if the scheme was not imposed, he said.
On the sale of diesel, Shafie said the ministry would continue monitoring all petrol kiosks and diesel wholesalers.
