Government hospitals to get Cuban Hepatitis B vaccines
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia will import the vaccine for Hepatitis B from Cuba, which will be made available in government hospitals on March 1.
Cuban Ambassador to Malaysia Pedro Monzon Barata said children should be given the priority to get the vaccine.
We have had the vaccine for 10 years in Cuba but it needed to go through clinical trials before it was registered in Malaysia, he said at the soft-launch of the 30th anniversary of diplomatic ties between Cuba and Malaysia here on Saturday.
Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Syed Hamid Albar said Cuba had expertise in pharmaceutical and biotechnological products, adding:
We have been working on bringing in some Cuban products but it took time to get acceptance and approval. I'm happy that the medicine will be available in March.
On the bilateral relationship between the two countries, he said it had grown stronger in the past five years.
We have been working closely at the multilateral level as the members of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM). A lot of consultation has been going on between the two countries as Cuba will be taking over the chairmanship of NAM from us next year, he said.
However, he said, the most important part was the interaction between the countries in the scientific, educational and biotechnology areas.
Barata said he was full of hope over the bilateral relationship with Malaysia, which was becoming more mature.
On the tourism exchange between the two countries, he said:
There are many Malaysian tourists in China and Thailand but we hope to get our share of Malaysian tourists.
On the upcoming programmes to celebrate the diplomatic ties, Barata said exhibitions would be held here and in Malacca, and there would also be a special screening of 19 Cuban films with English subtitles.
