Report: Taiwanese police identify suspect who shot president

TAIPEI, Taiwan (AP) - Police have identified the man who allegedly fired the shot that slightly injured Taiwanese President Chen Shui-bian one day before he was narrowly re-elected last March, a TV news report said Monday.

But TVBS cable news reported that the suspect, Chen Yi-hsiung, drowned during a fishing trip nine days after the March 19 shooting and his body was recovered 10 days later.

TVBS, a popular 24-hour news station, cited the suspect's relatives as sources.

The relatives, who were not identified, said the suspect left a will before going fishing, TVBS reported.

The document said he was displeased with Chen's administration, and the relatives said they burned the will, the report said.

The relatives said they were unsure if the suspect's death was a suicide or accident.

The suspect was featured in pictures of the shooting scene that police released to the public seeking help in identifying possible suspects, the report said.

The Prosecutors' Office of the High Court refused to confirm the reports, but said it would hold a news conference later Monday.

State radio said police located the suspect after finding another man alleged to have made the gun used in the shooting, but the alleged gunmaker, Tang Shou-yi, has since died of unspecified causes.

The pre-election shooting grazed Chen's stomach as he was riding in an open-top Jeep in a campaign parade in the southern city of Tainan. - AP
