Impounded diesel tanker stolen

BY BERNARD SEE

PENANG: A 21-tonne oil tanker, which was seized by the state Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs enforcement unit, was stolen from a carpark in Downing Street here.

Police are baffled as to how the carpark, which is used to keep seized vehicles as evidence, could have been left unattended.

The carpark in front of Bangunan Syed Putra is also used by government staff during office hours.

At least two thieves are believed to have struck in the early hours of Saturday and driven off with the tanker loaded with 5,000 litres of diesel.

Investigations showed that although the government carpark was fenced up, its main gate was unlocked.

The thieves are believed to have simply walked into the carpark, “hot wired” the tanker and driven off.

The tanker was seized by enforcement officers in Jalan Baru, Prai, at about 11pm on Thursday following a tip-off.

Two men, in their 20s, were busy filling the vehicle with subsidised diesel at a petrol kiosk when they were arrested.

On checking, the enforcement team found the vehicle fitted with an additional 15,000 litre tank.

State CID chief Senior Asst Comm II Syed Ismail Syed Azizan said the enforcement unit’s assistant director lodged a report over the theft at the Patani Road police station at about 12.30pm on Sunday.

Enforcement unit director Fahmi Kasim, when contacted, said the tanker was only temporarily parked there, adding that it was supposed to have been driven to another location yesterday.
