Clearing of forest blamed on orang asli
BY KULDEEP S. JESSYGERIK: The orang asli have been blamed for the clearing of forest along the banks of Tasik Temenggor near Kampung Desa Ria.
Perak Forestry Department director of operations Mohd Nasir Abu Hassan said that particular area was not under the Temenggor Forest Reserve.
He said part of the 2ha area was cleared by the orang asli for cultivation.
“They have cut down several trees in the area. However, this has nothing to do with illegal logging activities.
“This is the problem we are facing with the orang asli. We have from time to timetried to educate them on the need to stop such activities,” he said yesterday during a visit to one of the cleared sites at the Tasik Temenggor Forest reserve area which had been highlighted in The Star.
He was accompanied by Temenggor state assemblyman Datuk Hasbullah Osman, officers from the Anti-Corruption Agency and representatives from the media.
However, other areas along Tasik Temenggor such as Ciong and RPS Kemar which The Star highlighted were not visited.
Gerik district Forestry Department officer Amir Sharifuddin Aliman said the two contractors appointed by Tenaga Nasional Bhd to extract underwater logs had permission to cut down trees near the riverbank which had been approved for felling.
