Two earthquakes hit tsunami-ravaged Aceh

JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) - Two undersea earthquakes hit parts of the tsunami-ravaged Aceh province but there were no reports of damage or casualties, the local Meteorology and Geophysics Agency said Friday.

The first, magnitude 5.5 quake struck at 11:04 p.m. Thursday (1604 GMT) and was centered under the Indian Ocean, about 130 kilometers (80 miles) southwest of the province's capital Banda Aceh, said Syahnan of the agency's local office.

The second, 4.6 magnitude quake hit at around 6:47 a.m. Friday (2347 GMT Thursday).

It also was centered under the Indian Ocean, around 60 kilometers (40 miles) southwest of Simeulue, an island off the western coast of Sumatra, Syahnan said.

The first quake jolted Banda Aceh and its surrounding areas for about five seconds, added Syahnan, who uses a single name.

The second quake was only felt in Sinabang, the main town of Simeulue.

Neither quake caused casualties, damage nor did either one produce a tsunami.

In December, a magnitude 9 earthquake and subsequent tsunami killed more than 128,000 people and left a half-million homeless.

Three months later, an earthquake in the Indian Ocean left more than 900 dead on the Indonesian island of Nias and some smaller, surrounding islands. - AP
