Bomb in southern Thailand kills two patrolling marines, wounds eight
BANGKOK, Thailand (AP) - Two Thai marines were killed and another eight wounded when a bomb on a road exploded Friday as their truck passed by in southern Thailand, police said.
The marine unit was patrolling late afternoon in Narathiwat province's Bajoh district, an area of frequent sectarian violence, when the blast occurred, said police Lt. Surachai Khanthapanam.
Marine sergeants Chakaj Chiemthanom and Vitaya Duangcharoen died at the scene, while eight of their fellow marines who were wounded were rushed to hospital, he said.
No other details were immediately available.
The provinces of Narathiwat, Yala and Pattani are the only Muslim-dominated areas in this largely Buddhist country.
Since January last year, the three provinces have suffered from intense violence which the government blames on Islamic separatists, and more than 800 people have lost their lives due to the sectarian strife.
