Gas blast in northern Chinese coal mine kills at least 14
BEIJING (AP) - A gas explosion at a mine in northern China killed at least 14 miners, the government said Saturday, in the latest accident to strike the disaster-plagued industry.
The blast Friday at the Longhua Colliery in Shanxi province occurred when 31 workers were underground, the official Xinhua News Agency said.
Sixteen managed to escape but 14 were killed and one remained missing, it said. An investigation is underway, it said.
The number of deaths in China's coal mines surged by nearly 21 percent to 1,113 in the first three months of this year. Accidents kill an average of 16 miners day.
Officials acknowledge investment in mine safety and training is insufficient and management is lax. They say efforts to shut down dangerous mines have been complicated by the country's soaring demands for power to drive its booming economy.-AP
