PM: Teachers should keep abreast of progress

KUALA LUMPUR: Teachers should keep abreast of the latest knowledge and skills as well as international developments in a globalising world that is making rapid progress in science and technology, Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi said.

The Prime Minister said teachers should take the initiative to add to their value and be prepared to change in order to enhance the quality of their teaching and the education system.

“The Government, on its part, will continue to encourage and support teachers to enable them to perform their duties more effectively,” he said in his message in the souvenir book produced by the Education Ministry in conjunction with Teachers Day 2005 today.

Abdullah said the wishes and needs of teachers would continue to be taken into account by the Government in formulating education policies, programmes and activities.

He expressed confidence that teachers would be able to take on the challenge of raising the status of the teaching profession and strengthen the delivery of education.

He said the progress of a country depended on a human resource that was knowledgeable, skilful, virtuous, honest, determined and patriotic.

He said teachers played a key role in moulding this resource. – Bernama
