PM: Islam Hadhari does not mock the teachings of Islam
JITRA: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi has hit out at critics for accusing him of mocking the teachings of Islam by introducing the Islam Hadhari concept.
He said Islam Hadhari was derived from the core principles and teachings of Islam and was aimed at managing the multi-racial country in a just and fair manner.
He said certain quarters had said that despite being a descendant of religious leaders, he was trying to change the teachings of Islam.
“I am not trying to eliminate Islam or change the religion. As a leader I want to be fair to everyone.
“Am I doing the wrong thing?” he asked when delivering the keynote address in conjunction with the launching of Islam Hadhari (Islamic State Management) at Dewan Wawasan Kubang Pasu here yesterday.
Later, Abdullah told a press conference that he was not sidelining or neglecting Islam by taking the Islam Hadhari approach.
“Such a perception is wrong,” he said.
Among the objectives outlined in Islam Hadhari is the creation of a just government, comprehensive and balanced economic development, improved the quality of life, care for minorities and women, and strong culture and moral values.
Abdullah said that he was touched that Sultan Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah of Kedah had launched the Islam Hadhari programme in his state.
Abdullah said he would continue to accept invitations to explain the concept of Islam Hadhari to audiences overseas.
