Man killed by UK police linked to terrorism

LONDON (Reuters) - A man shot dead early on Friday by British police was directly linked to an anti-terrorist operation and police asked for help in tracing four men in connection with Thursday's attempted attack on London.

The man shot was "directly linked to ongoing and expanding anti-terrorist operation". "The man was challenged and refused to obey police instructions," Metropolitan Police chief Ian Blair told a news conference.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said they also wanted to trace four men in connection with the attacks and released descriptions and CCTV footage of them.

They said evidence collected by police indicated the explosives were homemade.

"Initial forensic examination indicates that a bomb partially detonated at each of the four sites," Assistant Commissioner Andy Hayman said.

"At this stage it is believed that the devices consisted of homemade explosives and were contained in dark-coloured bags or rucksacks. At this stage it is too early to tell how these were detonated."

Police said officers were searching an address in the Harrow Road areas of west London and at two other undisclosed addresses.
