China eases travel rules to spur Taiwan exchanges
BEIJING (Reuters) - China has simplified exit and entry rules for Taiwan residents as part of a campaign to foster closer economic ties with the island, state television said on Sunday.
Effective Monday, Taiwan residents can be granted multiple entry and exit permits, valid for one to five years, and forego obtaining separate residence permits, China Central Television cited the Public Security Ministry as saying.
Nearly 34 million Taiwan people visited mainland China from 1987 to December of last year, largely to visit relatives, see the country or work, it said.
Economic ties between the self-ruled island and mainland China have flourished since the late 1980s despite political tensions seen clouding regional peace.
Beijing has claimed sovereignty over Taiwan since their split at the end of the Chinese civil war in 1949 and has threatened to attack the island if it formally declares statehood.
