Strong quake shakes northern Japan, no tsunami warning issued
TOKYO (AP) - An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.0 shook northern Japan Wednesday morning, but it had nothing to do with reports of a possible nuclear test by North Korea, the Meteorological Agency said.
The quake, which struck at 8:58 a.m. (2358 GMT Tuesday), was centered off the coast of Fukushima. Fukushima is 240 kilometers (150 miles) northeast of Tokyo, the agency said in a statement.
There were no danger of tsunami, it said. Agency official Yukihiro Watanabe said that the tremor was a genuine quake centered near Japan and had nothing to do with reports of Pyongyang's possible second nuclear test.
Rafael Abreu, a geologist with the U.S. Geological Survey, also said the temblor off the coast of Japan was a natural event and not the result of a nuclear blast. He added the USGS has not detected any seismic activity in North Korea.
"This is definitely an earthquake,'' Abreu said.-AP
