Lightning kills man

KUALA LUMPUR: The downpour yesterday saw flash floods hitting several parts of the city and lightning striking a man and setting fire to a house here.

Rizman Buang, 32, a construction site supervisor, was killed on the spot when he was struck by lightning in a field in front of Amcorp Mall in Petaling Jaya.

In Jalan Semantan here, 11 people who were in a three-storey bungalow belonging to Gamuda Holdings director Datuk Yahaya Yeop Ishak got out safely after the house caught fire.

The fire began at 3.30pm, after a first floor bedroom in the hilltop house was struck by lightning, causing electrical wires to short circuit.

Several parts of the city including Jalan Travers and Jalan Sultan Ismail were flooded and motorists were left stranded after the downpour submerged a portion of the roads to knee-high.

Traffic came to a standstill in Jalan Travers as the entire stretch in front of Travers Police Station was flooded.

The three-lane stretch of Jalan Sultan Ismail in front of Sheraton Imperial Hotel turned into a one-lane road as motorists had to squeeze into the outer lane to avoid the water.

The downpour started at about 4pm and caused massive traffic congestion around the city for about an hour.
