Putera Umno aims for 30,000 students for Second Chance Scheme
KUANTAN: Putera Umno aims to get 30,000 students by 2008 for its Second Chance Scheme that provides training programmes for school leavers and dropouts.
Its chairman Datuk Abdul Azeez Abdul Rahim said to date, 1,180 were expected to undergo programmes in three colleges in the country.
“This first batch will be trained for work in the hospitality and automotive industries and as paramedics.
“This is in line with our objective of providing a platform for these youngsters to acquire certain skills so they can have a career and a decent life,” he said after a signing ceremony of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between Putera Umno and Kolej Ikip here on Thursday.
The MoU would pave the way for 380 youth to undergo hospitality courses at the college.
Abdul Azeez also said 600 were expected to register at Auto Terminal Training centre and another 200 at the Twin-Technology College for paramedics.
The programmes offered courses of between one year and three years, he added.
“Their studies are made possible by funds from various ministries, including the Human Resources Ministry. Those who are doing the three-year course will do so on a study loan,” he said.
Abdul Azeez said the programme was one of its efforts to reach out to those between the ages of 18 and 25 and help them lead a more meaningful life.
He added that they would be guaranteed jobs upon graduating as the movement had taken steps to get companies and hotels to employ them.
“They will have to sign a one-year agreement with the companies to ensure that they do not quit after several months of working. This is good as it will boost their morale and confidence,” he said.
